ABE Approved — Street Legal in Germany

If you ride in Germany, start here. The SUNNIGOO J5 ships with its ABE (Allgemeine Betriebserlaubnis) — the German general operating licence issued by the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA). Without an ABE, an electric scooter cannot be insured or used on German public roads. With it, the J5 is a road-legal vehicle rather than a private recreational device.

• The certificate travels with your scooter. The ABE document ships in the box, together with the vehicle data plate fitted to the frame.
• Add an insurance plate. German law requires a Versicherungskennzeichen — a compact annual insurance sticker issued by any German motor insurer, usually within minutes.
• Keep the paperwork on the vehicle. It is the document you present at a roadside check and when you sell the scooter on.
• Outside Germany, CE and EN 17128 apply. The J5 carries CE marking and EN 17128 compliance, the recognised standard for personal light electric vehicles across the EU.

Why the certificate is not shown on this page: an ABE only counts if the original document physically accompanies the vehicle. A picture of it on a website is not something an inspector or an insurer can accept, so we send the original with every scooter instead of publishing a scan here. Speed limits still apply. Under the German eKFV regulation the limit for e-scooters is 20 km/h. Set the restricted mode to whichever limit applies where you ride — 20 km/h in Germany, 25 km/h in most other EU countries — and always follow the figure recorded on your own ABE document.

Long Range, Explained

Range is the number riders care about most — and the one that's easiest to fake. Here's what actually produces 50–60 km on the J5:

• 48V 15Ah lithium pack (≈720Wh). Roughly 15–50% more capacity than the 10–13Ah batteries typical of this class.
• Efficient 600W rated motor. A 600W motor under a 22 kg rider draws less current than an 800W unit doing the same job — the trade is top-end punch, not usability.
• 10" pneumatic tires. Air-filled tires roll with less resistance over imperfect surfaces than solid rubber.
• ECO mode. Smooth, gentle acceleration that meaningfully extends range for commuting.

Real-world note: 50–60 km is the manufacturer's rated figure, measured under ideal conditions (rider weight, terrain, temperature, speed and tire pressure all affect it). Expect lower range in Sport mode, on hills, or in cold weather — as with every electric scooter.

Dual Disc Brakes — Front and Rear

Many scooters in this bracket cut costs on braking, fitting a single drum brake or relying on electronic braking alone. The J5 runs disc brakes on both wheels: a rotor and caliper at the front, and the same at the rear.

Disc brakes shed heat faster than drum brakes, which matters on long descents and in stop-start traffic. They also give a more linear, predictable lever feel, so you can modulate braking instead of grabbing at it.

10" Off-Road Tires & Front + Rear Suspension

The J5 sits on 10-inch pneumatic tires with a knobby off-road tread — the same size that gives you stability at speed and clearance over curbs and speed bumps, but with tread that actually bites on gravel, packed dirt and wet grass.

Because they're air-filled rather than solid, the tires themselves absorb a layer of road vibration. Add rubber suspension at both the front and the rear and the J5 stays composed on the surfaces that make solid-tire scooters uncomfortable: cobblestones, cracked asphalt, tram lines, expansion joints.

Both wheels also carry amber side reflectors, so you stay visible to traffic approaching from the side — not just from ahead.

The dashboard shows speed, a 4-bar battery indicator, Bluetooth connection status and error codes. For safety, the motor only engages once the scooter is moving above roughly 3 km/h (1.86 mph) — so a knocked throttle won't launch the scooter out from under you.

Note: your J5 arrives in an inactivated state and must be activated through the app before it unlocks full performance. It may beep occasionally until activation is complete. This is normal.

Assembly is limited to unfolding the stem and tightening six screws (two per side, one front and one rear on each). Please keep the original box and packaging in case the scooter needs to be shipped.

Important Notes

• Speed limits vary by country and region. The J5 has a maximum speed of 45 km/h and a restricted mode of 25 km/h. Always comply with the local legal speed limit where you ride — in most EU countries that is 25 km/h.
• Wear a helmet. An approved bicycle or skateboard helmet with the chin strap fastened is strongly recommended on every ride.
• Do not ride on motorways, highways or public roads where prohibited by local law. This product is a recreational and commuting device, not a road vehicle.
• One rider only. Do not carry passengers or children. Maximum load 120 kg / 265 lbs.
• Not recommended for riders under 16. Riders under 18 should ride under adult supervision.
• Do not ride in heavy rain, snow, ice or through puddles. The scooter is not designed for submersion.

• The hub motor gets hot during use. Do not touch it immediately after riding.
• Range figures are manufacturer-rated under ideal conditions. Rider weight, terrain, temperature, tire pressure and riding mode will all affect real-world range.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far can the J5 really go on one charge?

The manufacturer rates 50–60 km (31–37 mi) with the 48V 15Ah battery. In ECO mode on flatter ground with an average-weight rider, that's realistic. Expect noticeably less in Sport mode, on steep hills, or in cold weather.

Is it legal to ride on the road?

The J5 is CE certified and compliant with EN 17128, and ships with its ABE operating licence. Germany is the strictest case, and the J5 covers it: with the ABE document plus a valid insurance plate, it is legal on German public roads. Elsewhere in the EU the CE marking and EN 17128 compliance are what apply. The scooter has a 25 km/h restricted mode — set it to whichever limit applies where you ride (20 km/h in Germany). Do I need anything else to ride legally in Germany?

Yes, two things beyond the ABE: an annual Versicherungskennzeichen (insurance plate) from any German insurer, and a speed setting within the 20 km/h German limit. Riding age is 14 and over. We recommend a helmet on every ride.

Does it have disc brakes on both wheels?

Yes. The J5 uses a disc brake system at both the front and the rear wheel, each with its own rotor and caliper.

Is it suitable for off-road use?

It handles gravel paths, packed dirt, grass and unpaved park trails comfortably thanks to the 10" knobby pneumatic tires and front and rear rubber suspension. It is not designed for downhill mountain biking, jumps, stairs, or deep mud.
